CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
African Regional Security in the Age of Globalisation
This book has emerged from a conference, held in Nairobi in March 2004, which addressed aspects of the processes of globalisation, especially as they interact with regional security issues in the East Africa and Horn of Africa region. The contributions, by both practicioners and academics from the region, identify main security challenges in the region and analyse diverse aspects of security, in the areas of politics, economics, and gender. Others comment critically on the various sub-regional organizations engaged in security issues, such as the Inter-Governmental Auhority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (EAC). In addition, the book analyses the peace processes in Sudan and Somalia. Ultimately, it suggests a security architecture in the IGAD region and identifies the challenges facing its design and implementation.

The book is the result of a cooperation between the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (IDIS) of the University of Nairobi, the National Defence College of Kenya (NDC) and the Heinrich Böll Foundation's Nairobi office.

The editor, Dr. Makumi Mwagiru, is the Director of IDIS, Nairobi.
